Depression
Depression is a mental health disorder that can effect anyone at no given age. The mood disorder can deeply impact and interfere with one's daily life activities. (NIMH 2023). College students are one of the targeted groups that are associated with depression. After the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders was issued, within one of the most diverse universities, depression scores have increased, following a decrease in physical activity within the students. (Cougenhour et. al, 2020)
6 Ways to Reduce Depression Symptoms
These 6 exercise interventions and activities can help reduce depression symptoms. The most efficient intervention for college students is performing Tai Chi with Yoga coming in a close second. (Guo et al., 2020) These activities may be completed individually, in duos, or as in groups.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is ranked as #1 most effective activity. Meditation plays a big role in relieving the symptoms.
Running
Running is the 4th most efficient in reducing symptoms, just below dance.
Yoga
Yoga is ranked 2nd in relieving depressive symptoms. As in same regards to Tai Chi, meditation helps with the relief more efficiently.
Volleyball
Volleyball will be ranked in the bottom along with Basketball. The sport itself is played within teams, but is still quite effective in reducing the symptoms. (Guo et al., 2020)
Dance
Dance is in the mediate rank in 3rd for the effectiveness of reduction in depression. It gives a form of therapy in another way as art. (Guo et al., 2020)
Basketball
Basketball will be the most, but least efficient physical activity in comparison to the rest that's listed. Like Volleyball, it's more effective in regards to performing as a group.
